Animal transport conditions
Small animals
They may travel in the cabin if placed in a container with a waterproof and absorbent base that does not exceed 40x28x26 cm and weighs no more than 10 kg.
Large animals
They may travel in the hold (pressurized and heated) in an appropriately sized container.
In both cases, we recommend checking with travel agencies or the Airlines the transport methods applied by the carrier.
Since there is a limit to the number of animals that can be carried on each flight, it is always recommended to make reservations for pets. Transportation prices vary depending on the airline. Guide dogs are completely free of charge.
As a general rule, the animal must be vaccinated against the main diseases and accompanied by its health record.
Specifically, regarding the rabies vaccination, if departing/arriving from other Italian regions, the dog (or cat/ferret) must be properly registered with the pet registry and accompanied by a registration form showing the chip number. If departing/arriving from another EU country, the animal must be registered with the registry and accompanied by a European Passport showing the chip number and proof of rabies vaccination. If departing/arriving from a non-EU country, the animal must be registered with the registry of its country of origin and accompanied by an International Certificate showing the chip number and proof of rabies vaccination.
In all cases, only dogs that have received basic prophylactic treatments (against ectoparasites and endoparasites and against the most common diseases: distemper, parvovirus, leptospirosis) may be transported on public transport, ships, or airplanes.
